n the weekend of April 15-18, the Mustang turned 40 years old, marking a longevity that few cars can match. America's favorite sports car and the original Pony car, has maintained its popularity through the enthusiasm of loyal owners and fans. 100,000 fans of the Mustang gathered together in Nashville to throw the Mustang one hell of a 40th birthday party.
Over 3,500 Mustangs from around the nation made the trip to Nashville Super Speedway to celebrate 40 years of Mustang with a giant car show, huge manufacturers midway, super swap meet and three all Mustang races. The celebration was hosted by the Mustang Club of America and Ford Motor company along with some 55 other corporate sponsors.
Nashville was a fantastic choice for the event as the Speed Way is a state of the art and brand new racing facility. Beyond the Speedway Nashville offered great after show activities like a Mustang Cruise to historic down town, the Grand Old Opry and the General Jackson diner cruise.
The opening ceremonies were held on the apron of the speedway allowing show goers a great few of the activities from the grandstands. Bill Johnson, MCA president, opened event by introducing some notable Ford personalities. On hand was, Steve Lyons, president of Ford Motor Company, Don Frey, project manager for the original Mustang, Joe Oros, chief designer for the original Mustang, Gale Halderman, design director of the original Mustang, Edsel Ford II, great grandson of Henry Ford, Jim Chism, MCA executive director of the event and racing greats, Carroll Shelby and John Force.
Our club had several of our members in attendance. Joining the celebration were Jim Biermann, Jeff and Eric Hohl, Terry Koch and Cindy Ahrens and her crew of Austin, Kenzy and Brandon. Terry Koch displayed his '93 Cobra and was awarded with an "Award of Excellence".
